What is a Welding Boom
A welding boom (also referred to as welding space arm, wire feeder boom or welding cantilever stand in the industry) is a dedicated cantilever support fixture for welding workshops. It is not a welding robot but auxiliary equipment matched with MIG/MAG welding machines.
The complete set consists of an upright column, multi-section rotating cantilever and balance mechanism with integrated cable channels. It suspends the wire feeder, welding torch, power cables, wire feeding hoses and shielding gas hoses on the cantilever. Some models come with built-in fume extraction ducts. It supports 360° rotation, vertical lifting, forward and backward telescoping, and positioning lock at any working position. Welders can easily maneuver the boom to bring the torch and wire feeder to the weld joint without repeatedly moving heavy wire feeders and dragging ground cables. It is widely used with CO₂ gas shielded welding.
Working Principle of Welding Boom
Welding booms adopt spring self-balancing, hydraulic balancing or pneumatic assistance to offset the dead weight of the cantilever and wire feeder, enabling effortless manual movement and stable positioning. Boom joints are equipped with locking brakes to prevent sagging or shaking after adjusting to the desired welding angle. All cables and gas hoses are routed internally inside the boom, avoiding abrasion, crushing and tangling on the workshop floor. Fume extraction integrated booms have built-in negative pressure air ducts to capture welding fumes at source the moment the arc strikes, realizing local dust removal for workshop environmental protection.
Key Advantages
Reduce welder fatigue and prevent occupational illnessesIn traditional welding stations, welders need to drag wire feeders and dozens of meters of cables around. Long hours of bending and arm lifting often cause neck and shoulder strain. Thanks to the balanced structure of the welding boom, operators can rotate the cantilever with minimal force, greatly cutting physical strain and optimizing welding posture.
Protect pipelines and lower consumable costsCables, wire feeding hoses and gas lines are installed overhead. They are protected from rolling, pulling and trampling damage, extending the service life of torches and feeding hoses and minimizing downtime for part replacement.
Improve welding efficiency and cut non-productive timeEliminate time wasted relocating wire feeders and untangling tangled cables,
increasing the arc-on time. Daily welding output per workstation rises noticeably; stable torch posture delivers consistent weld bead formation and reduces rework.
Keep workshop tidy & safe, mitigate safety hazardsNo messy cables on the ground. Forklifts, overhead cranes and workpiece turnover operations can proceed unobstructed, lowering tripping risks and cable leakage hazards. Fume extraction welding booms control welding smoke simultaneously to meet environmental and occupational health inspection standards.
High flexibility with custom optionsArm length and load capacity are optional. Mounting types (wall-mounted / floor standing column) are available. Single-arm and double-arm configurations can be customized with integrated fume ducts to adapt to different workpiece sizes and workshop layouts.
Classification of Welding Booms
Spring Self-Balancing Welding BoomMainstream market model with cost-effective pricing and simple maintenance. Suitable for small and medium steel structure, agricultural machinery and sheet metal workstations for light and medium load wire feeders, easy to operate.
Hydraulic Welding BoomHeavy-duty version with large load capacity and smooth operation. Designed for heavy engineering machinery, pressure vessels and large tank welding, offering longer vertical lifting travel.
Integrated Fume Extraction Welding BoomCantilever built with fume extraction air ducts. It supports wire feeding and welding while extracting smoke nearby. The preferred option for manufacturers with strict environmental requirements.
Track-Mounted Mobile Welding BoomBase fitted with rails for movement along workshop tracks, covering a wide working range. Widely applied for heavy steel structures, ship blocks and large tank production lines.

Welding Boom Selection Guide
- Working radius / arm length: Select based on the maximum welding range of workpieces. Common sizes range from 2–8 meters; extra-long booms are available on custom request.
- Load capacity: Calculate total weight including wire feeder, pipelines and fume extraction duct, with sufficient safety margin reserved.
- Balance type: Spring balance for light-duty use; hydraulic type for heavy load and frequent lifting. Choose integrated fume extraction boom directly if environmental compliance is required.
- Mounting method: Floor standing column for spacious workshops; wall-mounted when floor space is limited. Track mobile welding boom for wide-range multi-station welding.
- Workshop conditions: For heavy-duty workshops with high dust levels, select reinforced sealed joint versions for longer service life.
FAQ
Q: Is a welding boom a welding robot?
A: No. A welding boom is an auxiliary welding cantilever fixture. It supports the wire feeder and torch while welders hold the torch manually to perform welding. Welding robots execute full automatic welding. The two devices can work together as a set.
Q: Is welding boom installation complicated?
A: Standard models are easy to assemble. Floor-standing type fixes the base; wall-mounted type attaches to load-bearing columns. Manufacturers supply installation drawings and technical guidance. Single workstation installation can be finished quickly. It can be matched with your existing welding power source without replacing the main welding machine.
Q: Does a fume extraction welding boom need a separate purifier?
A: Yes. The fume extraction cantilever only transports smoke through pipelines. It needs to connect externally to a welding fume purifier or central dust extraction system to purify emissions.
